Crime is one of the most enduring genres in fiction. The process of solving a mystery or diving into the seedy underbelly of society is appealing to many, with enthusiasts enthralled with what happens next. While the genre is best known through novels and on the screen, comics have had a long history with crime. It was a popular genre until the Comics Code slowed down the output. However, it has never gone away, with elements appearing in superhero comics (especially Batman) and a resurgence of the genre with the rise of creator-owned comics.

Now, IDW Publishing is making its mark with a new imprint dedicated to the genre. IDW Crime aims to spotlight the genre through modern, creator-driven stories of murder and mystery that hold a mirror up to society.

This guide has everything you need to know about IDW Crime. Read on to learn more about the comics available and more details on the imprint’s editorial ethos.

IDW Crime’s structure

While each IDW Crime series explores a different facet of the genre, there are a few elements that make each comic structurally similar. Each miniseries is three issues long, containing 40+ pages of material in every issue. To sweeten the deal, each issue will retail for $4.99. That’s almost twice the number of pages of your standard Marvel comic at the same price. Not bad!

IDW Crime editorial ethos

IDW Senior Group Editor Heather Antos had the following to say about the imprint:

“With the IDW Crime imprint, we’re honoring that legacy while giving it a modern spotlight — elevating creator-driven stories that feel urgent, character-forward, and unapologetically human. These are stories about obsession, consequence, and the ability to hold a mirror up to society, and we couldn’t be more excited to help bring them back to the forefront of mainstream comics.”

It certainly looks like IDW is serious about the imprint and looking to make their mark on the genre.

Will there be more IDW Crime comics?

It’s safe to assume there will be future IDW Crime comics if IDW has gone to the effort to create an imprint. However, when additional series will be released is currently unknown.

It’s possible that IDW is keeping the imprint small. As a result, we may not see another new series until one has concluded. The earliest we could see a new series launch is in October.

We’ll have to wait and see. This guide will be updated when more concrete information is made available.
