The X-Men franchise is full of dystopian futures. For more than 40 years, Marvel Comics has served up an array of dark futures for the mutants to rise above. Some of these stories have been classics, while others have been so-so. Age of Revelation hopes to be in the former camp when it’s published between October and December.
Set ten years in the future, the heir of Apocalypse, Revelation, has taken over the world through his amplified power of linguistics and a philosophy of survival of the fittest. In his wake is a utopia for mutants, but coming at a terrible cost for humankind. It will be up to a group of mutant rebels to topple the regime.

How to read Age of Revelation
Age of Revelation is a massive comic book event containing 52 issues. That’s a lot of comics! That’s too much investment (financially and in time) or simply a daunting task for some readers. Luckily, you do not have to read them all if you don’t want to.
Marvel has set up Age of Revelation with a build-your-own sandwich approach. X-Men: Age of Revelation #0 and X-Men: Age of Revelation Overture #1 are the top slice of bread, with X-Men: Age of Revelation Finale #1 the bottom slice. All the other comics – an array of three-part miniseries – are the tasty fillings, which you can load up as much or as little as you want.
As long as you read the metaphorical slices of bread, you can read as many of the comics that sit between them as you like. You could choose based on the premise, character and creators involved, your budget, or your general interest in the event. It’s totally up to you!

Background reading
After you looking to do some reading to prepare yourself for Age of Revelation? Here are a pair of reading recommendations.
X-Men: Heir of Apocalypse #1-4
Written by Steve Foxe. Art by Netho Diaz.
Apocalypse has decided to leave Earth for Arrako, formally known as the planet Mars. However, to ensure the mutants of Earth don’t become weak, he has assigned an heir to keep his philosophy of survival of the fittest alive. Twelve mutants compete for the right to be the next Apocalypse.
The character who becomes the heir, known as “Revelation”, plays a big part in Age of Revelation.
X-Men: Age of Apocalypse
Written and art by various.
Age of Revelation isn’t the first time the X-Men comics have paused to tell a massively sprawling story in a dystopian alternate world. It was first done in 1995’s Age of Apocalypse. Check out this event if you want some more insight into Age of Revelation’s structure and how Marvel has done it in the past.
