The Triangle Era of Superman comics is a period that many readers are fond of. It gave us classic stories like The Death of Superman Saga and many smaller tales exploring what makes Superman Superman. In a way, these comics were not just about Superman, with his extended supporting cast given plenty of time to shine with their own stories, dramas, and adventures that made Metropolis feel buzzing and alive. While these comics feel timeless as a quintessential depiction of Superman, there was also plenty of experimentation and reinvention, introducing ideas like Electric Blue Superman and recontextualising many classic villains.
With hundreds of comics involved, it can be hard to navigate the Triangle Era. Luckily, this massive reading order is here to save the day, listing all of the comics involved and heaps of extra details. Soon you’ll be able to enjoy this classic period of Superman comics and the goodies it possesses.
What is the Triangle Era?
The Triangle Era refers to a period between 1991 and early 2002 for Superman comics. During this time, the four ongoing Superman titles – Superman (1987 series), Action Comics, Adventures of Superman, and Superman: The Man of Steel – acted like a weekly ongoing series.
Most of these comics told self-contained stories by dedicated creative teams and would see Superman facing a villain or getting into some big adventure. However, at the same time, there were several sub-plots at play. These would be told over multiple weeks or months, sometimes setting up larger stories later down the line. Sub-plots like this would often involve Superman’s supporting cast, such as Lex Luthor, Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, Bibbo, or the happenings at the Daily Planet.
To help keep track of it all chronologically, DC Comics implemented a secondary number to the issue number on the cover. Fans referred to this as the “Triangle Number” as it was housed in a triangular box. Later on, it would be shaped like the Superman shield. This allowed readers to place the four different Superman ongoing series chronologically and came in handy for various crossovers that were told over multiple Superman titles.
How do the Triangle Numbers work?
So, how do the Triangle Numbers work? The triangular box would include the publication year, followed by the chronological number noting which order it should be read.
Let’s use Superman: The Man of Steel #8 as an example. Its triangle number is “1992/5”. This means it is the 5th Superman comic released in 1992. It’s set after Action Comics #673 (triangle number: 1992/4) and before Superman (1987 series) #64 (triangle number: 1992/6).
The Triangle Numbers reset every calendar year. For instance, the final Superman comic of 1993 had a triangle number of 1993/40 and 1994 begins with 1994/1.
Do you need to read everything?
Nope, you don’t have to read every comic of the Triangle Era. The purpose of the numbering system isn’t to force readers to read the whole ten years of Superman comics. Instead, it’s a frame of reference for chronology, subplots, and crossovers.
Many of the comics during this era feature self-contained stories. You can jump into an adventure that has a start, middle, and end, making for a satisfying read.
Where to find Triangle Era Superman comics
A lot of the comics in the Triangle Era have not been reprinted or have collections that are well out-of-print. However, most of these comics can be found cheaply in the back-issue market via comic book shops, online retailers, and eBay. Alternatively, they’re available digitally through Kindle and DC Universe Infinite.
How to use this reading order
How you use this reading order will depend on what kind of reader you are and how you wish to engage with the Triangle Era. These could include:
- Reading the entire Triangle Era
- Figuring out what to read before or after a specific issue
- Mapping out which issues are required for a crossover story
- Wanting to know where a specific issue fits into the larger chronology
As there are hundreds of comics involved in this era, I highly recommend using the search of your browser (Ctrl+F or Command+F) to search for a Triangle Number, issue, or story name.
Please note that the story name listed is based on what it’s called inside the comic and not on the cover.

After the Triangle Era
The Triangle Era ended in 2022, with the four Superman titles opting for more of a siloed approach to storytelling. This allowed for the more decompressed storytelling, which was becoming the standard in superhero comics in the early 2000s, where titles were allowed to have multipart stories without the need of crossovers.
Superman (1987 series)
Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuiness would continue being the core creators on Superman for about another year. Afterwards, Geoff Johns would take over writing duties, with Pascal Ferry on art.
Action Comics
Joe Kelly continues to write Action Comics until 2004, where he was replaced by Chuck Austin.
Adventures of Superman
Joe Casey would continue to write for some time after the Triangle Era. The Adventures of Superman comic would end with issue #649 in 2006. The number, which it adopted from Superman, would be given back to the series.
Superman: The Man of Steel
After a fill-in issue written by a young Geoff Johns, Mark Shultz continued to write Superman: The Man of Steel until it’s conclusion. The series would end with issue #134 in 2003.

Tremendous resource you’ve created here, well researched, clear and thorough I just had a question about a small thing in issue:
1997/18
Superman: The Man of Steel #67
Written by Louise Simonson. Art by Jon Bogdanove.
Story: TBC
Where did you get the story title TBC from?
Hi! I couldn’t find the title for this issue so I referred to it as “TBC” as in “To Be Confirmed”. The plan was to find look for the story name again at a later date.
I just wanted to stop by and say thanks Trevor for doing this. Because it must have took you awhile to get all of the triangle year comics in order and you did a “super” job and I’m having a blast reading them.
Outstanding work my man, this was a tremendous effort, one of the most genuinely helpful roadmaps/indexings I’ve seen in years, honestly. Thank you for doing the work that makes reading comics more enjoyable/less confusing. You’ve saved me hours of searching reddit threads for story arc reading orders, keep up the great work, fan for life!
Thank you! I’m glad you’ve found it so helpful.
