The Marvel Comics Universe has been running since the early 1960s. Many comics that started at that time are still around today and have racked up hundreds of issues. While they’ve been relaunched at various times, starting at issue #1 again, they have a special number that keeps track of how many issues they have had in totality. This is known as the legacy number.

The legacy number can be confusing since Marvel has used it inconsistently and applied odd leaps in logic to calculate some of them. This guide gives you everything you need to know about Marvel’s legacy number. It explains what it is and how it works, showing how the publisher has calculated it for many of their comic book series.

Updating…

Please note this is intended to be a living guide that’s updated regularly. The plan is to update the guide every one to two months with the latest legacy numbering for each series. Additionally, other series/characters will be added over time.

Please don’t jump into the comments to tell me I’m a month behind. I’ll get to it eventually.

Legacy numbering explained

For the longest time, superhero comics were treated as ongoing series. Each month Marvel would release an issue of a comic book series, with the issue number ticking upward with each subsequent release. The numbering would continue if the comic received a new creative team or a radical shake-up. This meant that comics that started in the 1960s saw numbers in the 300s and 400s by the mid-1990s. Then the relaunches started.

First, there was the ill-fated Heroes Reborn initiative, which relaunched series such as AvengersFantastic Four, and Captain America. That was followed by Heroes Return, which corrected the mistakes made by Heroes Reborn. Further relaunches happened under the Marvel Knights imprint and in the 2000s. It became a tool to strategically fix lagging titles, with a #1 issue being seen as a clean jumping-on point for readers and a license to print money for Marvel. The 2010s amplified this practice, with titles relaunched for every creative team change.

While these relaunches have advantages, some readers felt like a series being relaunched every few years meant that the comic books lost some of their legacy. To help connect everything together Marvel Comics introduced the legacy number in 2001.

The legacy numbering was a secondary number on the cover that added up all the comics from previous iterations of a comic that came before. For instance, Amazing Spider-Man (1999 series) #35 had a legacy number of #476 on the cover. This is a combination of 441 issues of the original 1963 series plus the 35 of the 1999 series.

Amazing Spider-Man (1999 series) #35 cover by John Romita Jr.
Amazing Spider-Man (1999 series) #35 cover by John Romita Jr.

The legacy number has been sporadically used since its inception. However, Marvel does keep track of it and will roll it out when a comic reaches a milestone. When series such as DaredevilAmazing Spider-Man, and Fantastic Four reached their 500th issue in the legacy numbering, Marvel shifted legacy number to be the main number and continued from there. For instance, Fantastic Four (1997 series) #70 was followed by Fantastic Four #500 and Fantastic Four #501 after that and so on.

Marvel has been implementing legacy numbering on a more consistent basis since 2017. Most comics with some form of history will include a legacy number on the cover, indicated by “LGY” before it.

Wonky calculations

Some comic book series are straightforward in their legacy numbers. Guardians of the Galaxy comes to mind as being an easy calculation. On the other hand, many are a bit more wonky in how they’re calculated.

Some of the longer-running characters, such as Doctor StrangeCaptain America, and The Hulk, inherited their numbering from anthologies they appeared in before those comics transformed into full-time superhero comics. Marvel renamed the series and continued the numbering due to restrictions on the number of comics they were allowed to publish at the time.

Other times, there are odd inclusions that make up the legacy number of some series. There are a few instances where a miniseries is included in the make-up. However, that logic isn’t applied to all characters. This is either by mistake or perhaps done to strategically reach a milestone at a particular time.

In one or two cases, Marvel just got it wrong. An example is The Hulk, where the publisher celebrated issue #600 too early.

I’ve tried to note and explain these oddities where possible throughout this guide.

How to use this guide

I’ve tried to make this guide as straightforward as possible. Each set of legacy number calculations are grouped by character/series, which are ordered alphabetically. The list is then broken into instances of a series, where each one is where a comic might have been relaunched, changed names, or adopted the legacy number once it reached a milestone.

Here’s an example of a line item in the list:

#442-499 – Amazing Spider-Man (1999 series) #1-58

The bolded part is the legacy numbers. It’s then followed by the corresponding issues. At the top, I’ve also included where that comic book series is up to in its legacy numbering and the issue that corresponds with it.

Don’t worry if it doesn’t make sense here. It will be clearer once you see a entire list.

Breakdowns of Marvel’s legacy numbers by series

Below is a breakdown of Marvel’s legacy numbering by series. Most popular comics have been included (with more added later) and have been listed in alphabetical order.

Amazing Spider-Man

We kick everything off with Amazing Spider-Man! This is the main Spider-Man comic book series, which has been running in some capacity since 1963.

#734-751 – Amazing Spider-Man (2014 series) #1-18

#752-756 – Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows #1-5

Note: Marvel have included Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows miniseries, which was a tie-in to the 2015 Secret Wars event. Not sure why they’ve only included the Secret Wars tie-ins for Amazing Spider-Man and not for other comics. I assume it was a way for Marvel to reach the issue #800 milestone faster.

#757-788 – Amazing Spider-Man (2015 series) #1-32

The line-up of the Avengers team might’ve changed numerous times throughout the years, but the one thing that’s consistent is that Marvel has had an Avengers comic.

#691-707 – Avengers (2018 series) #1-17

#708-717 – Avengers: No Road Home #1-10

Note: Marvel has included he limited series Avengers: No Road Home #1-10 into the legacy numbering. I suspect this is due to it being a follow-up a story in the main series or Marvel’s desire to reach a legacy number by a certain date.

Black Panther

Black Panther’s legacy numbering is rather straightforward – apart from borrowing Daredevil’s legacy numbering for a short period of time.

Current Legacy Number: #222
Current issue: Black Panther (2023 series) #10 [Published 20th March, 2024]

#1-15 – Black Panther (1977 series) #1-15

#16-77 – Black Panther (1998 series) #1-62

#78-118 – Black Panther (2005 series) #1-41

#119-130 – Black Panther (2009 series) #1-12

#131-141 – Black Panther: The Man Without Fear #513-523

#142-147 – Black Panther: The Most Dangerous Man Alive #524-529

Note: The reason that Black Panther all of a sudden has issue numbers in the 500s is due to the character taking over Daredevil for a time. From a story perspective, Daredevil was recovering from the conclusion of the Shadowland event and T’Challa took over his mantle for a time. While it was a Black Panther series, the comic borrowed the numbering for a time.

Captain America

It’s worth noting that Marvel doesn’t count any of the golden age Captain America stories. However, his legacy numbering does get a leg-up thanks to inheriting the numbering for Tales of Suspense. This has further wrinkles to it by shifting focus from Steve Rogers to Sam Wilson and then back again at certain times.

Current Legacy Number: #762
Current issue: Captain America (2023 series) #12 [Published 28th August, 2024]

#1-99 – Tales of Suspense #1-99

Note: Tales of Suspense was a science fiction anthology, which told one-off stories. However, it became a home for Iron Man stories with issue #39 and later was shared Captain America from issue #59. The series became a full-time Captain America series with issue #100 and inherited the numbering.

#100-454 – Captain America (1968 series) #100-454

#455-467 – Captain America (1996 series) #1-13

#468-517 – Captain America (1998 series) #1-50

#664-669 – All-New Captain America (2015 series) #1-6

#670-693 – Sam Wilson: Captain America (2015 series) #1-24

Note: There were two Captain America series at this time, one starring Sam Wilson and the other starring a fake Steve Rogers. Marvel has used the Sam Wilson series as he was seen as the main Captain America at this time.

#694 – Captain America (2015 series) #25

#695-704 – Captain America #695-704

#705-734 Captain America (2018 series) #1-30

#735 – Captain America (2022 series) #0

#736-749 – Captain America: Symbol of Truth #1-14

Note: Again, this was a period where there were two simultaneous Captain America series running at the same time. Marvel have used the Sam Wilson series again as I think it was more convenient for to reach issue #750.

Captain Marvel (Carrol Danvers)

While Marvel has had multiple heroes call themselves Captain Marvel, the legacy numbering here refers to the current one – Carrol Danvers. Further to that, this legacy number accounts for Carrol’s time as Ms. Marvel as well, making it number based around the character and less the identity.

The Punisher

The Punisher comic has been relaunched a lot! At one point there were three Punisher series running at the same time. However, Marvel has only taken into account the called “The Punisher”. Also, no MAX series either.

#245-256 – The Punisher (2022 series) #1-12

Note: The current Punisher series, which began in late 2023, hasn’t been counted towards the legacy numbering at this moment. This is due to there being no evidence of Marvel applying the legacy numbering to the series. This could be due to Frank Castle not being the starring character of the comic. I’ll update this section if things happen to change.

Venom

Venom was part of a trend in the 1990s known as the ongoing miniseries. While there technically wasn’t an ongoing series, there was always an issue released each month in the form of a Venom miniseries or one-shot. Marvel has added all of these up to make up the legacy number.

  • Great article.

Another tidbit or callout for Captain America is that originally issues 620-636 were all titled Captain America and… yet Marvel excluded them.

And for Thor, they went with the “main” comic featuring Jane instead of including Unworthy Thor.

And similar for Hulk they included Amodeus Cho with Totally Awesome.

  • Nice overview… and with all those pretty colors! 😉

Last Legacy rebumbering 😛 victim = Loki vol.6 (I think) #1, which officially is supposed to be Loki #027 – but I can’t get the numbers to fit.
    – Loki vol.1 #1-4
    – Loki vol.2 #1-4
    – Loki vol.3 – Agent of Asgard #1-17 (plus a possible #0 taken from All-New Marvel Now! Point One #1)
    – Loki vol.4 – Vote Loki! #1-4
    – Loki vol.5 #1-5
    – Loki vol.6 #1 = #027???
    . . . which makes 4 + 4 + 17 (or 18) + 4 + 5 + 1 = 35 (or 36), which is 8 (or 9) too many. But which ones to ditch?? Questions, questions, questions . . .

    Keep ’em thwipping!

    • I think we should drop vol. 1 and vol. 2. They often exclude the first miniseries when a long ongoing followed, so that the numbering of the historic ongoing and the legacy numbering match. See Incredible Hulk vol. 1, Wolverine vol. 1…

  • Hi Trevor, this is spectacular, thanks for doing this! Understanding that this is a big undertaking, I’d just like to place a vote for the X-Men! I know it’s a gargantuan task but just thought I’d throw that out there if you weren’t sure what you would tackle next! Love your site, love this page! Thanks for all you do!

  • Thanks very much for compiling this. There was also a four-issue Black Panther miniseries in 1988 (just called Black Panther; no subtitle) that Marvel didn’t count toward the legacy numbering for that series. I wonder if they just forgot about it? I think they consider the Claremont/Miller Wolverine mini to be part of Claremont’s Uncanny X-Men run, but in my opinion it should still count toward the legacy numbering for Wolverine’s solo series.
