There are so many interpretations of Spider-Man. Much of this is due to the character’s popularity, where versions can exist beyond Peter Parker and be explored from different perspectives and angles. Comic book fans and film go-ers would be familiar with some of them, such as Miles Morales and Spider-Gwen. However, those two, while wildly popular, are not the first. There was one that came decades before and is ready to find a whole new audience due to Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse animated film. That is Miguel O’Hara a.k.a Spider-Man 2099.

Do you want to read Spider-Man 2099 comics? This extensive reading order will help you start reading Miguel O’Hara’s comics and point you in the right direction as to what to read next. Also included are plenty of annotations, alternative collections, and optional reading.

Happy reading!

Who is Miguel O’Hara?

Miguel O’Hara is the Spider-Man of the year 2099. Unlike Peter Parker, he wasn’t bitten by a radioactive spider. Instead, he was an Irish-Mexican geneticist who attempted to recreate the powers of the original Spider-Man in other people. However, an experiment goes wrong, and half his DNA is rewritten with a spider’s genetic code. While Miguel is hesitant to use these powers at first, preferring to find a cure, he realises he can use them to help stop the corrupt mega-corporation Alchemax from ruining the world further.

The majority of Spider-Man 2099’s comics are set in the future. Although, there have been times when Miguel O’Hara has spent time in our present day. This has included several interactions with Peter Parker and other present-day heroes.

Spider-Man 2099 was by far the most notable character of the Marvel 2099 line. His comic was the longest-running and best-selling of the 2099 slate of comics. Further, this interpretation of Spider-Man has made numerous appearances beyond the original run.

What is Marvel 2099?

Marvel 2099 was a comics line that launched in 1992. Set in the year 2099, it offered readers a glimpse at the potential future of the Marvel Universe (designated Earth-928) and reimagined many characters. Several comics were published in this line, including Doom 2099Punisher 2099Ravage 2099 (starring an original character created by Stan Lee), X-Men 2099, and Spider-Man 2099, among others.

The line was popular for a time, with more comics joining its initial line-up. However, it fizzled out by the mid-1990s due to waning interest as the market contracted and Marvel’s financial turbulence. The final issue of the line was published in 1998.

Where can I find Spider-Man 2099 comics?

Spider-Man 2099 comics can be found at all good comic book shops, online retailers, eBay, Amazon/Kindle, and Marvel Unlimited.

OPTIONAL: Exiles was a series that ran from 2001-2008, which featured alternate universe characters on dimension-hopping adventures. Spider-Man 2099 was a regular towards the end of the run. However, this was not the Miguel O’Hara that starred in Spider-Man 2099 (1992 series) but one from a divergent timeline. As a result, I’m listing this as optional.

Check it out if you like the idea of a superhero version of Sliders. Otherwise, you can skip it if you want.

In it, the multiverse was recreated as Battleworld, which had different slices of alternate worlds in a patchwork-like world. One of these was the 2099 timeline, which allowed for Marvel to revisit the characters of that universe and features Miguel O’Hara.
