Actor Dwayne Johnson has been getting fans excited about the upcoming Black Adam movie for years. While it will hit theatres in October, you won’t have to wait until then to get your first taste. DC Comics will publish a series of one-shots known as Black Adam: The Justice Society Files that highlight characters featured in the movie.

Read on to learn more about the Black Adam: The Justice Society Files comics, including which comics are part of it and how to read them.

What are Black Adam: The Justice Society Files?

Black Adam: The Justice Society Files are four 48-page one-shots that focus on a character who will appear in the Black Adam movie. These stories give readers and movie-goers a taste of the heroes of the Justice Society before they make their big-screen debut.

Each one-shot focuses on a different hero, telling a standalone adventure set before the movie. This also allows for some additional back-story so you can be more familar with the characters when you see Black Adam.

The comics will also have a backup story, which will focus on Teth-Adam, a.k.a Black Adam, and his wife. This story will be serialised through all of the one-shots to form a larger tale.

Who is the Justice Society?

It’s not required to know anything about the Justice Society to enjoy Black Adam: Justice Society Files. However, read on if you’re curious to learn more about them.

The Justice Society, mostly known as the Justice Society of America (JSA) in the comics, is a superhero team that first appeared in the 1940s. Kind of a proto-Justice League, it consisted of Golden Age heroes of the time such as Doctor Fate, Hourman, The Spectre, Sandman, Atom, Flash (Jay Garrick), Green Lantern (Alan Scott), and Hawkman.

The team fell into obscurity when the initial popularity of superheroes waned in the latter half of the decade. They were then brought back in the 1960s and were revealed to be living on the parallel world of Earth-2. The 1970s and 80s saw the JSA receive new comic book series which saw the heroes aged, have hero children of their own, and add new characters into the mix. The JSA were then integrated into the main DC Universe after the Crisis on Infinite Earths comic book event and have had multiple series since.

For the version of the Justice Society in Black Adam, the filmmakers have decided to use a slimmed-down version that includes Hawkman, Cyclone, Atom Smasher, and Doctor Fate. The characters should be similar to what is seen in the comics in regards to their powers and appearance – but without the baggage of history mentioned above.
