Saga went on hiatus after issue #54 in July 2018 and fans have been dying to find out when it will return ever since. Well, as announced back in October, the wait is over! The much-loved series is returning this week.
Wednesday marks the release of Saga #55. Written by Brian K Vaughan, art by Fiona Staples, lettered by Fonografiks, and published by Image Comics, this fantastic series enters its second half of a planned 108-issue run.
For those who haven’t had the chance to read Saga, it’s a science fiction/fantasy comic where Romeo & Juliet meets Star Wars. It follows two soldiers, each from different sides of a never-ending conflict. The pair have fallen in love, had a forbidden child, and are on the run from their governments and various bounty hunters.
Each reader has their own reason for loving the comic. For some, it’s all about the well-rounded characters and their dynamics that explores what it means to be a family (biological and found). For others, it’s the world these characters inhabit, beautifully illustrated while at the same time not afraid to head down weird paths. And some people just like how shocking it can be – whether it’s the plot twists or in the graphic sex and violence.
Whatever it is, Saga is a melting pot of ideas that many have tried to replicate over the past decade.
So what can we expect from Saga #55? The creators are keeping their lips tight on story details at the moment, so we’ll have to read to find out. Although, we do know that it will have jumped a few years ahead from the ending of Saga #54.
While story details are light, Entertainment Weekly got the scoop on the first page back in December. Check it out below.
Saga has always been known for great value and that trend continues with this latest issue. The comic will have 44 pages of story for the low price of $2.99.
For those who prefer to read in Saga in trade paperback, you’ll need to wait a bit longer. The 10th volume should be out sometime in August.
Will Saga #55 be a good place to start reading? At the time of writing, I can’t confirm that it will be as, like everybody else, I haven’t read it. Although, it will be the start of a new story where many years have passed since the previous issue. That being said, there is the possibility of spoilers – especially Saga #54’s big reveal.
New readers could use Saga #55 to sample the comic to see if the tone, art, and characters will be something they would want to read more of. Then you can go back to the beginning and catch up.
(Speaking of sampling, Image Comics has made Saga #1 available to read on their website for free.)
Whether you’re an existing fan or new to the series, I hope you enjoy the issue. It’s been a long wait for it, but it’s great to have Saga back.
Saga #55 is available in all good comic book stores, online stores, Comixology, and eBay from the 26th of January.
Have your say!
