A few years ago, the X-Men comics were radically shaken-up. Instead of the X-Mansion, the mutants of the Marvel Universe moved to a living island, known as Krakoa, and formed their own nation. From there, a range of exciting new concepts breathed new life into the franchise. More than two years later, Marvel will take the X-Men to the next stage of progression with two Wolverine-centric miniseries – X Lives of Wolverine and X Deaths of Wolverine.

The two series form a weekly 10-part story that will see Wolverine travel to his past and the future to prevent the death of a key figure in mutant history. Along the way, readers will explore pivotal moments in Logan’s history and a few never before seen ones too.

Along with Inferno, it promises to be a saga that will set up future X-Men stories.

Comic book events can be hard to follow – especially when there’s a twin miniseries format and a weekly schedule. This X Lives of Wolverine/X Deaths of Wolverine Reading Order has everything you need to make reading easy. Read on to find out how to read this comic event, background reading, and more.

How to read X Lives of Wolverine/X Deaths of Wolverine

X Lives of Wolverine and X Deaths of Wolverine are complementary miniseries that act like two sides of the same coin. They should be read together, with readers bouncing back-and-forth between the two in a similar manner to House of X and Powers of X from a few years ago.

Background Reading

Here are some comics I recommend if you’re looking to do some reading before X Lives of Wolverine/X Deaths of Wolverine.

House of X/Powers of X

The following miniseries set up the foundations for the current status quo of X-Men, as briefly outlined in the opening paragraph. Read these two miniseries to get acquainted with what’s been going on to understand the current era. Check out this reading order to find out how.

Benjamin Percy’s Wolverine work

Not essential in understanding X Lives/X Deaths. However, I recommend it for those who want to understand how Percy writes Wolverine. Alternatively, you can go back to this afterwards if you yearn for more Wolverine action. Read Wolverine (2019 series) #1-19.

Weapon X by Barry Windsor Smith

As mentioned before, X Live/X Deaths will involve time travel, with Wolverine visiting foundational points in his history. One of these points will be the Weapon X program, where he had the adamantium bonded to his bones. Read Marvel Comics Presents #72-84 or the collected edition Wolverine: Weapon X.

X-Men (1991 series) #4-7

Omega Red will have a big role in this event. Read these issues if you want to know more about him.
