For 20 years, Jim Butcher has been building an exciting urban fantasy world in his series of novels, The Dresden Files. Starring Harry Dresden, a wizard and private investigator who investigates the supernatural happenings of Chicago, the series has gone on to become a best seller and create countless fans.
If two novels in 2020 is not enough for you, then you’ll be excited to know that Dynamite Entertainment has published The Dresden Files comics. Set in the universe of the novels, these follow further adventures and cases of Harry Dresden.
Continue reading to find out more about the comics and their recommended reading order. For timeline conscience fans, I have included notes about where they fit in relation to the novels.
Are These Comics Set In Dresden Files Continuity?
Yes. The comics stories are set in between specific novels and take account what has been happening in them while telling a self-contained story.
Is Jim Butcher Involved?
He sure is! Jim Butcher is closely associated with the comics, plotting with his co-writer Mark Powers. He also acts as story consultant as well, making sure that the comics align with the universe that he has created in his novels.
Are These Original Stories Or Adaptations Of The Novels?
As you’ll see below, there is a mixture of adaptations and brand-new stories. The first few comic stories were direct adaptations, but Dynamite Entertainment soon started releasing brand-new stories.
I have put notes throughout the reading order which indicate if the comic stories are adaptations or original so you can take the guesswork out of figuring out.
Where Can I Find Dresden Files Comics?
You can find Dresden Files comics in all good comic book stores, online stores, eBay, and digitally on Comixology.

Will There Be More Dresden Files Comics?
While nothing has been announced, it’s possible that there will be more Dresden Files comics in the future. The last miniseries came out in 2017 so it would be a large gap between releases, but considering there will be a six year gap between novel 15 and 16 then it’s possible more couple happen in the near future.
I’ll update this reading order if anything gets announced.
