Star Wars isn’t just a bunch of box-office smashing movies. The adventures in a galaxy far far away extend into every medium, including novels, toys, video games, TV, and even comic books. Comics have had one of the longest relationships with Star Wars with Marvel publishing stories as early as 1977.

Between that time and 2014, Star Wars built up a very healthy expanded universe, known as the Legacy continuity, which explored anything and everything Star Wars. These stories introduced us to exciting new characters, explored events that we never saw on screen, and allowed characters that didn’t enough screen time their chance to shine.

With decades worth of material, The Legends continuity can appear as scary as an encounter with Darth Vader. Fortunately, this handy reading order guide is here to help make sense of everything. Answering all your questions along the way, this extensive reading order is the perfect reading companion.

What Are Star Wars Legends?

Legends are the name of the Expanded Universe media (eg comics/video games/novels etc) that existed before 24th April 2014. This is when Lucasfilm decided that everything in the Expanded Universe was no longer canon and that a new Expanded Universe would be created ongoing, which is built around the two original trilogies, Disney’s Star Wars movies, and the Clone Wars animated series.

Every Star Wars comic published from 2015 onwards are part of the new Expanded Universe.

Why Should You Care About Star Wars Legends?

They might not be canonical any longer, but it doesn’t mean that new readers cannot be invested in the Legends continuity. While each fan will have their preferences, some advantages to Legends include:

  1. The new Expanded Universe tends to not deviate too far away from the three trilogies. As a result, the Expanded Universe can feel quite small. On the other hand, Legends feels much larger by exploring the distant past and future.
  2. More original characters to be invested in.
  3. While Marvel offers a variety of Star Wars comics to enjoy, the comics as part of the Legends continuity have a lot more variety. As a result, there’s a Star Wars comic for almost every fan.
  4. There are a lot of concepts and ideas that you will not find anywhere else.
  5. There are many comics that are set after the original trilogy, which makes it an interesting comparison to the Disney prequel trilogy.

Do I Have To Read Everything In Order To Understand What’s Going on?

Nope, not at all.

Most of the comics of the Legends continuity were made up of self-contained stories which have their own start, middle, and end. In most cases, you can pick up any story and enjoy it.

You’ll probably see that there is the occasional sequel as you browse this list. Often with these, you might need to read the previous series to get the full context, but these often have a beginning, middle, and end as well.

As long as you’ve seen the Star Wars movies (original and prequel trilogy) then you shouldn’t have anything to worry about.

Who Publishes These Comics?

This list consists of comics that were published by Marvel Comics between 1977-1986 and comics by Dark Horse Comics that were published between 1991-2014.

Currently, the Disney-owned Marvel Comics has the rights Star Wars and has been reprinting the Legends comics as part of their Epic Collections. Additionally, all the digital versions of the old Dark Horse comics will now have the Marvel logo on them as part of the changing rights.

Where Can I Find Star Wars Legends Comics?

Star Wars Legends comics can be found in comic book stores, online stores, digitally on Kindle and Marvel Unlimited, and on eBay.

Keep in mind that these comics are not new releases so not every store will have every Star Wars comic available. Some of these will be easy to find in the back issues section or in trade paperback collections while others will be harder to track down. That being said, sometimes tracking them down is just as fun as reading them!

How Do I Use This Reading Order?

This reading order has been made with different kinds of readers in mind. As a result, many people will use it differently. Here are a few examples:

  • You might want to use it to read everything Legends has to offer from start to finish
  • To explore specific eras in Star Wars continuity
  • To see where a comic book story sits in relation to the movies
  • To see where a comic book story sits in relation to the wider Legends continuity

I Need Your Help!

While I feel like I’ve pieced together the entire reading order, there is a possibility that I am missing a few comics. If this is the case, kindly let me know and I can add them in.

Keep in mind that some of these may already be on the list under a different name. I have put notes in there where possible when this is the case.

  • Great work! Helps a lot for sure. I wonder if you could include the new Legends Omnibus releases in one of the next updates?

  • This list is fantastic. I’d there also some kind of Buyer’s Guide so I/we can figure out the cheapest number of collections to buy? I’d like to go digital, but I’m always worried about content being taken down.

    • Hey Kevin, I’m glad you enjoy the list. Marvel currently owns the rights to all of the Star Wars comics catalogue and as Star Wars and Marvel are owned by Disney it is likely they will keep it for a very long time. Comixology or Marvel Unlimited has 99.99% of the Star Wars comics available but not all of them will be available in a collected format.

  • Love your list by the way. Is the story of Darth Caedus and Abeloth ever in comic form or is it only in novels.

    • Hey Peter, I’m glad you like it. As for your question, Abeloth never appeared in any of the comics but Darth Caedus did. You can find Caedus in Dark Empire II, Empire’s End, Crimson Empire III, the Invasion series, Star Wars: Union and a few others from the period.

  • Is Red Harvest in continuity? Apparently it takes place in the Old Republic era. It has Darth Scabrous, and he has an army of zombies.

  • I have several comic titles that don’t appear in this list. Two I can think of, off the top of my head, “Tag And Bink Are Dead” and all of the “Star Wars Tales” issues. I have not read a lot of the Tales stories so not sure if those are considered part of the timeline or of they’re one-offs. Anyway, great listing. Thanks!

    • Hey Sam, I had missed the Tag and Bink stories. I’ve added the ones that were in continuity (all of them except The Return of Tag & Bink – Revenge of the Clone Menace, which was never considered part of continuity). A lot of the Star Wars Tales comics are within the reading orders and broken up by story. Many of them were not considered continuity at the time so they haven’t been included but it wouldn’t hurt for me to go through them again to confirm I haven’t missed any.

  • This is AWESOME! Wish you could add in all the novels, audio dramas, EU TV films & shows. It would be amazing to finally have one complete legends EU timeline from start to finish, with notations on cancelled novels. I bought The Essential Reader’s Companion a few years back for this reason, but it has no appendix showing titles were the stories too place. It was just a history synopsis.
