This Saturday is the most exciting day of the comic book calendar – Free Comic Book Day. If you’re not quite sure what it is or where to participate, don’t worry, read on to discover everything you need to know.
Held on the first Saturday of every of May, this year being on May 4th, FCBD is like Christmas for the comic book community. Celebrating the comic book medium, people can get together and share the passion of comics with one another. It doesn’t matter if you’re brand-new to comics or have been reading them for years, you’re welcome to participate.
As the name suggests, free comics are given out at comic book stores and other participating locations. All you need to do is show up on the day and you can receive special Free Comic Book Day releases.
Many comic book stores celebrate the day by turning it into a big event: throwing parties, having artists do drawings, comic book creators signing comics, big sales, cosplay competitions, and other wonderful activities. It’s heaps of fun and it’s fantastic to see people, young to the young at heart, having such a great time.
Sounds awesome, doesn’t it?
Finding your closest Free Comic Book Day event is as easy as heading over to the Free Comic Book Day website. Simply enter your zip code into the search bar. (If you’re outside of North America, there’s also a special search too.) From there you’ll be able to check out the store’s profile and see what’s happening on the day and other information such as their opening hours and more.
In the past I have noticed that not all stores have all the activities that they have on the day listed, so it’s a good idea to search what’s going on. The best way to do this is by:
- Check out their website. It’s also a good way to confirm the address and opening hours.
- Check out the store’s Facebook page. Most stores have them and it’s an easy way to keep updated on information about the day and any last minute changes.
- Give the store a call during business hours before the day (they’ll be super busy on Saturday)
Just so you know, not every comic book is free. Comic book stores would go out of business if that was the case.
Each year there is a selection of comics which publishers have hand-picked for your reading pleasure. These free comics tend to give you a taste of recent releases or upcoming stories, and sometimes even original stories made just for the special day.
Every year there is a variety of comics to choose from and this year is no different. In total there are 51 comics to choose from. Some of the comics available include:
- Bob’s Burgers
- Stranger Things
- My Hero Academia/Promised Neverland
- Firefly/Buddy the Vampire Slayer
You can find all of the participating titles here.
In most cases, you can read a short preview of the comics. This will give you a good taste of what’s on offer and make it easier to pick on the day.
Most good comic book stores will stock all of the titles, but some of them will disappear fast as it’s generally first come, first serve. As a result, there may be a limit as to how many comics you can get for free. Some stores will allow for more free comics with a purchase but this will vary store to store.
Keep in mind that even though the comic books are free for customers that they cost the comic book store money to order them. So make sure you give them a big thank you, and maybe even buy something in their store.
If you can’t make to Free Comic Book Day, don’t stress, as many of the free comics will be available for free on Comixology at a later date.
The most important thing to remember about Free Comic Book Day is to have fun. Bring along your friends and family and check out the festivities. Mingle with like-minded people and discover new comics you might not have known about before.
Free Comic Book Day is one of the best days of the year and once you’ve experienced it you’ll know why!
