When you think of the Middle Ages the first things that come to mind are castles and epic sword fights. What people often forget that it was a grim and bloody time. It’s something that the latest Image Comics series, The Last Siege, from writer Landry Q. Walker, artist Justin Greenwood, colourist Eric Jones, and letterer Patrick Brosseau, has definitely not forgotten.
The Last Siege promises to take the blood, desperation, and loss of the middle ages and bend it with Spaghetti Western storytelling. The series will begin with the arrival of a mysterious swordsman to a castle that has been overrun. The soldiers who have captured it are bent taking the throne from the rightful owner, an 11-year old girl, by force. Who is this stranger and is he able to take on a whole army by himself? You’ll have to read the series to find out!

It sounds like a pretty grim series, but it’s also expected to be action-packed. At this year’s Image Expo artist Justin Greenwood about working on the Last Siege: “Fast, gritty and full of action—I’d been looking for a book to really cut loose on and this project came along at the perfect time. I haven’t drawn this much dirt or blood in a long time and loving every minute of it.”
I think fans of medieval settings, such as Game of Thrones, and cool sword action will really dig The Last Siege. If that’s you then you should make sure that this new comic book series is on your radar.
The Last Siege #1 will be available at all good comic book stores, digitally at the Image Comics website, and Comixology from May 30th.
