Old Man Logan Reading Order Guide

By 9 Comments

In 2008 Mark MillarSteve McNiven and Marvel introduced the world to a very different version of Wolverine, the one of the distant (and alternate) future. Staying alive due to his healing factor, Old Man Logan stars an aged version of Wolverine that lives in a violent wasteland overrun by supervillains. It became critically and fan acclaimed and is now deemed a modern classic.

You get asked heaps of questions when running a website like How To Love Comics. Although, one that I get asked all the time is “what is the reading order for Old Man Logan?” It’s a valid question to ask when you consider the extra interest in the character thanks to the Logan movie and the confusing publication history.

To make things easy, I have put together the Old Man Logan Reading Order Guide. It gives you all the information needed about the various stories and appearances of Old Man Logan. Additionally, it includes trade paperback releases and links to where they can be read/purchased.

Do you need to read everything?

No. You don’t have to read everything. Some of the stories are not all that interesting, hard to find, or not all that essential.

If you’re only interested in the original Old Man Logan story then you can read that in isolation. It’s a satisfying read on its own. For those who are more interested in Old Man Logan in the regular Marvel Universe then you can skip to the 2016 series.

Where is a good starting point?

So where is a good place to start reading Old Man Logan? Here are a few suggestions with accompanying notes.

Wolverine: Old Man Logan

This is the original Old Man Logan story which ran in the 2003 Wolverine series. It is made to be self-contained so you can read this on its own and get a satisfying read. It’s also worth checking out for Steve McNiven’s art, which is some of the best of his career.

Old Man Logan (2016 series)

Start with Old Man Logan (2016 series) #1 if you’re interested in the character’s time in the regular Marvel Universe. This ran for 50 issues and an annual and was then followed up with the 12-issue Dead Man Logan series.

Wolverine: Old Man Logan is post-apocalyptic alternate future and stars an aged Wolverine. This storyline appears to be major inspiration for the Logan film.

Old Man Logan returns as part of a tie-in series to 2015’s Secret Wars. You don’t have to read Secret Wars to understand it. 2015’s Secret Wars concluded with the Marvel Universe being remade. Most of this saw the world being reset to the way it was but included a few popular characters and concepts from alternate universes making their way to the regular Marvel Universe. This included Old Man Logan, who got his own comic book series.

Old Man Logan ended up being the default Wolverine comic as the regular Wolverine was dead at the time.

You don’t need to have read the previous stories listed above. However, you’ll get a lot more out of it if you have read Mark Millar and Steve McNiven’s Wolverine: Old Man Logan.
