Since 2005, IDW Publishing has excelled with its Transformers comics. They have done so by using the characters and concepts of the classic Generation 1 canon as a base and then adding new ideas on top of them. It stays true to what makes Transformers a much-loved franchise and heads and shoulders above anything Hollywood is doing.
However, with multiple series, dozens of one-shots, different timelines, and so many characters, IDW’s Transformers comics can appear to be an impenetrable wall. But it doesn’t have to be!
I have created the Transformers Chronological Reading Order Checklist to help make sense of everything. It includes a reading list in chronological order of events in the Transformers comics. Well, it’s actually two lists. I’ve broken it into single issues and collected editions to give different readers different options.
Table of contents
- Which comics does the reading order include?
- Do I have to read everything?
- What’s the difference between Phase 1, 2, and 3?
- Where can I find these comics?
- PSA: IDW is losing the Transformers license
- Transformers reading order (issues)
- Collected Edition Reading Order
- The IDW Collection
- How About The 2019 Series?
But before we dive into the reading orders, here a few questions answered for clarity.
Which comics does the reading order include?
IDW has done a lot of different types of Transformers comics, but the ones I am focusing on are the ones that are part of the IDW 2005 continuity. So this means comics such as Regeneration One, Transformers vs. G.I Joe, Marvel/Dreamwave reprints or anything that ties into movies/TV shows are not included.
Do I have to read everything?
No.
If you don’t want to you don’t have to. I’ve listed everything for those who are interested in reading everything. For those who don’t want to take the plunge into the entire run then you can start anywhere you see a bold issue. These are intended to be jumping-on points.
What’s the difference between Phase 1, 2, and 3?
There are three distinct phases in IDW’s Transformers comics.
- Phase 1 is mostly based on Earth and is concerned with the war between the Autobots and Decepticons.
- Phase 2 is based on Cybertron and focuses on what happens when the war between the Autobots and Decepticons has ended.
- Phase 3 is is a mixture of action Cybertron and Earth. One of it’s distinct features is that it crosses over with a number of Hasbro properties.
PSA: IDW no longer has the Transformers license
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter in January 2022, IDW will lose the license to Transformers (as well as G.I. Joe) at the end of 2022. This means there will be no new Transformers comics and collections from the publisher from 2023 onwards.
IDW’s Transformers comics/collected editions will start to be hard to come by for those who prefer to read in print as everything goes into an “out of print” status. The back issue bins and eBay will become the go-to place for finding the comics you need.
2023 Update: Image Comics imprint Skybound has picked up the licence for Transformers and G.I. Joe and will being publishing stories in October, 2023, as part of the Energon Universe.
At this moment, there’s no indication when Skybound will reprint the IDW material or bring it to digital. I’ll update this section if there is any new news on this.
Where can I find these comics?
IDW’s Transformers comics can be found at any good comic book store as well as on Amazon/Kindle, and eBay. You can find out more about where you can buy comics in this handy guide.
Transformers reading order (issues)
Below is a reading order for all of the comics for the Transformers 2005 continuity broken down by single issues. This is the best way to read everything if you’re the kind of person who wants to read everything in its entirety.
This is broken up into the different phases (1-3) and then by different parts of those phases to distinguish the crossovers.
Jump to: Phase 1 | Phase 2 | Phase 3

Phase 1
This is where it all begins! As I mentioned before, Phase 1Β mostly consists of the conflict between the Autobots and Decepticons on Earth. However, there are some stories set in the early days of the conflict on Cybertron but were published during Phase 2 and 3. These have been added in added into the Phase 1 section as they fit well with the chronology of events.
In the early days, IDW released the Transformers comics in several miniseries building upon each other. These were then supplemented by various one-shots spotlighting a particular character.

Note: Megatron Origin was originally made to be part of the Dreamwave continuity but didn’t come to fruition due to Dreamwave’s financial issues. It was accommodated to fit the IDW continuity in 2007. That being said, many of the events of Megatron Origin has been retconned or greatly expanded upon through the flashback scenes of the Chaos Theory storyline (The Transformers (2009 series) #22-23).

Phase 2
We have now entered Phase 2 of the Transformers comics! The war is over and it’s time to return to Cybertron and rebuild society.

More Than Meets The Eye/Robots In Disguise
With the war over, the surviving Transformers return to Cybertron to rebuild society. However, just because the war is over doesn’t mean that there isn’t any conflict.
This era of Transformers comics starts with an introductory one-shot that helps you get up to speed and then pushes the story forward. From here, Transformers comics are primarily broken up into two ongoing series – More Than Meets The Eye and Robots In Disguise. The latter focuses on dealing with what is happening in post-war Cybertron. The former focuses on the crew of The Lost Light, who are on a quest to find the mythical Knights of Cybertron.
Chris Sims of Comics Alliance has done a fantastic series of write-ups on this era of comics called The Transformed Man. It’s definitely worth the read if you have the time.

How About The 2019 Series?
In March 2019, IDW and Hasbro rebooted the Transformers comic book continuity. So far, it has been an enjoyable comics which is a good place to jump on if you look at the above and decide it’s too messy for you.
Have Your Say On The Transformers Comics!
Have you read any of the Transformers comics? Let me know in the comments below or via Facebook or Twitter.
thank you.
Just noticed in the Phase One collected editions Infestation Vol 2 is listed after Hearts of Steel and then further down — is this correct?
Thank you so much for this list!
Howdy! Quick question? Between
More Than Meets The Eye #49 and the Holiday Special, you list Transformers #45? Is this a different one than The Transformers #45 shortly after? Potentially the Marvel issue?
Hi Katherine, it was an accidental duplication and has been removed. Thanks for pointing it out.
So, thank you so much for this article. It is glorious. At the end of the first reading order though you have unicron 4 before unicron 3. Is that correct or a typo?
Thanks for pointing that out. It’s a mistake that’s now been corrected.
Hi, first and foremost, I would like to say thank you to the author of this article. I have recently been trying to get into some Transformer comics with zero knowledge on comics and little knowledge on transformers. This article is such a useful tool for people like myself.
Thank you very much!
Hello, thank you for this list, I am starting off reading the Autocracy trilogy.
I have a question about spotlight, Orion pax, and Autocracy. Shouldnβt the spotlight Orion pax go before autocracy? Reason why I am asking is because Zaida prime mentions Sentinel prime in Autocracy. Therefore, spotlight, Orion pax should be before autocracy. If I am wrong, can you please explain?
I meant to say Zeta Prime.
First: thank you for this list!
Now my question: I’ve got the IDW Hardcover collections from Phase One 1-8, Phase Two 1-12 and Phase Three 1-3. Also the Unicron Collection paperback, or whatever that’s called.
So I think I am missing out on content between the Phase Three 3 and Unicron paperback, correct? Will there be another collection type Phase Three 4, do I have to get single comics or a different route completely?
IDW loses the license at the end of 2022 and they haven’t announced any further hardcovers. It is possible that whatever publisher takes over the license in 2023 might release an equivalent hardcover to complete the series but it’s not guaranteed. Best off tracking down the remaining comics in another format.
It may have taken me a couple of months but I’ve finished ALL OF IT. So I just wanted to drop by and thank you, Mr. Van As, I wouldn’t have made it this far without your list!
Just a small observation, I believe the order for the final Unicron Saga is a little off, since Unicron #0 happens between pages 13-14 of Optimus Prime #22, and Unicron #1 happens right after it. The Unicron issues should start being read after Optimus Prime #22 I think, not before it. This is because the context for those Unicron issues are established in Optimus Prime #21 and #22, such as why Bumblebee is alive again (#21) and Optimus’ plan with Caminus that’s established in #22. Other than that, great list! This got me through the quite convoluted continuity.
Sorry! I realize that wasnβt very specific – Iβm looking to just get The Transformers issues 39-42, but there doesnβt seem to be a volume anywhere with just those that I can find.
Hello,
I have the volume Windblade: The Last City, but according to the list itβs missing several parts of the Combiner Wars series. I would rather not buy the Combiner Wars books, since they also contain the Windblade Series. Do you know if thereβs a way to just get the Combiner Wars issues? Thank you!
Hi there, thx for the list is completely identical to mine, im reading the serie, im really disappointed about the gender matter introduced in TF, i understand that the brand should have had a twist, too much childish the manga storyline, but the last arcs about the lost light is the straw that broke the camel’s back… in my opinion, even the odyssey about Megatron, the feelings about Ravage… and i think that’s the reason cuz they rebooted everything, hoping the new story won’t be ruined… if you happen to post the new chronological order, due to the many series they won’t to introduce, even these series will be mini-serie, A BIG THANKS!
Can I just say this list is brilliant! I am a massive fan of transformers, always have been, always will be but I have never before come across just a simple “this is the order, now READ” kind of website but that is exactly what this is! Thank you sooo much!
Doesn’t Stormbringer take place between Infiltration #5 and #6? At the end of Stormbringer, Optimus is told he has a message from the Autobots on earth, and then he goes there. At the end of Infiltration #6 Optimus is on Earth. I think it should be changed to Infiltration #1-5, Stormbringer #1-4, then Infiltration #6.
Thank you so much for this list, I’ve been going through start to finish and am blown away by how much I’ve been missing. This made it easy to know where to start and what to read when! Thank you!
I’ve been collecting up the comics sporadically for awhile (buying binges on sale) and kept accidentally getting some completely out of order. Thank you for this list, I’ve put the comics I have in order but there are a few that aren’t in the list.
If you still read this, I have a comic collected miniseries called “Police Action” but the book is Chaos. I think these might come in the issues after Heart of Darkness near the end of Phase 1? The collected mini-books are really bad about telling what issues they were originally.
Also does Regeneration One fit anywhere in these timelines?
Hi and thanks for this list. There is also the ongoing series Transformers (2019). Because I haven’t read it yet I’m not sure where is its place
If I’m correct, I think 2019 Transformers is a reboot.
Do you know where The Transformers #32-34 go? I donβt see it on the list.
Hey Cody, there isn’t a “The Transformers #32-34”. The 2009 series ended with issue #31. The other series referred to as “The Transformers” was previously known as “Robots in Disguise”, using the new name from issue #35. Robots in Disguise #32-34 are present in the reading order. I hope that helps.
Thank you for this comprehensive list! I started reading series in order and then I managed to get the IDW Phase 1 and Phase 2 collections, all 8 volumes in each, and I just started reading it that way. Even though I’m a seasoned comic guy of 43 years it was quite overwhelming to get into TF comics from IDW in early 2019 when they have been doing this property since the early 2000’s. They have done so many series and one shots, yet they all connect either directly or chronologically. I hate reading series out of order so getting all that I could only to find out I missed a series here and there, very frustrating. Once again, thank you for this list and for also having more information about these comics, like why this and why that, instead of just the issue #’s in order. Very helpful!
I feel like the reading order in the Unicron section is wrong.
Optimus Prime #21 seems to precede Unicron #0 and #1, and maybe Optimus Prime #22 and Lost Light #1 and #2 do as well.
What about All Hail Optimus?
All Hail Optimus is a story that runs through Transformers #50-55.
Hello! Where does Bumblebee Go For The Gold fit into this? Is it even canon?
It’s not part of the IDW canon and ties in with the Bumblebee: Win If You Dare graphic novel released in September 2018.
Where does Starscream: The Movie fit into this timeline? It is an IDW publication that covers a lot of important backstory.
Isn’t Autocracy only a TPB/HC? Why do you have it listed as 12 issues?
Hey Derrick, good question. It was originally released digitally as 12 issues before being collected.
Minor errors:
-Blurr starts before and ends just after Orion Pax
-Nightbeat happens just before Escalation
-Ultra Magnus coincides with Escalation #1 (though the flashbacks are to right after Soundwave)
-Sixshot takes place sometime before Infiltration
-Kup follows indirectly from Stormbringer
-ROM Annual and ROM vs TF occur in the 19th century, a few decades before Hearts of Steel
-New Avengers/Transformers occurs before or during Escalation, not after
-Mirage takes place during the timeskip between Maximum Dinobots and AHM
-Wheelie begins between Autocracy and Monstrosity (but time-travel so eh)
– Drift is set “centuries ago” according to Empire of Stone (but ends during the timeskip between AHM and TF’09)
-The flashback in Jazz is set between Shockwave and Cliffjumper (though the frame is right before AHM)
-Combiner Hunters takes place around the same time as TF’14 #44
-Till All Are One #1-4 take place during/before TF’14 #51
-Revolutionaries and the other Reconstruction series take place entirely before Optimus Prime #1
Source: TFWiki IDW Timeline
Thanks for the updates. I have made the changes to the list.
Could you please include the list of the smaller collected works?
Escalation, then devastation etc?
Soundwave comes LONG after Stormbringer. It’s mentioned in there as if it’s an old news event. It also didn’t make sense jumping from Cybertron during the Civil War to Earth and Decepticon Infiltration.ESPECIALLY since it comes before Hearts of Steel and features events in 1984, whereas HOS is 1800s. O_O;;
Hey William, thanks for pointing that out. With over 400 comics in this list there were bound to be a couple that are accidentally in the wrong place. I’ll fix it up.
hello just wondering why Autocracy is not after Megatorn origin since it happens after megaton origin
hello! where does the Bumblebee Spotlight fit into this list? i know it takes place somewhere during Ongoing, but im not sure between which issues it belongs
After Dark Cybertron, can I continue on only reading MTMTE, or are there future crossovers or references to events in the other series that will leave me confused? If so, at what point(s) would you suggest I pause reading MTMTE and go back to catch up with the others? I intend to read all the series eventually, but I much prefer to read one at a time so I can focus on each linear storyline instead of having to keep track of all those different stories at once.
Also, thank you so much for putting together this reading order!
Yeah, you should fine to read one over the other until they crossover again. They have their own stories and deal with different aspects.
is it possible to bypass the revolution and first strike and just read transformers
Yeah, it should be okay to do. If there’s any reference to them in other comics you can always read the plot summary for them on Wikipedia.
wait wait wait, shouldn’t tf autocracy be placed on the same time line before or after megatron origins? why is it part of phase 2? shouldn’t that be part of phase 1 chronologically?
THANK YOU!!!!!! I was driving myself NUTS trying to figure out which order to read the collections in! LOL, I have been reading them BACKWARDS and have been banging my head on a table trying to figure out what series to go to! This is EXTREMELY HELPFUL! Thank you SO MUCH!
Glad I could help, Laurie! I hope you’re digging the Transformers comics.
I believe Transformers Spotlight: Megatron takes place between issues The Transformers #12 and #13, not #13 and #14.
How can I buy these? My youngest son likes to borrow the graphic novels of the movies from the library, but I think he would love to have ownership of his own graphic novels. He is now 8 and has loved Transformers since before he was 2. I grew up watching the 80’s Transformers and so in the 90’s my husband and I bought Beast Wars and Beast Machines for our oldest and even the DVDs so my youngest has been watching those and has taken those toys for his own as well as the toys for the movies that were bought for his twin brothers who are 3 years older than him. He loves Transformers and I think he will never not like them. Thank you!
Hi! That’s so cool to hear! You’ll be able to find the graphic novels for these at most good comic book stores. (If you use that link you’ll be able to find the closest one to you. If you don’t have one nearby then online is a good option. Phase 2 has some high concept ideas that might go over an 8 year old’s head, but the comics that are part of phase 1 should be easier to understand. Otherwise, IDW has collections of the old Marvel Comics series which ran while the original show was on the air, which should be more his speed. There’s also a comic based on the current Transformers animated series.
Google has them in the Play Store too. That is how I’ve been reading mine.
can someone help me out, i’m reading through the collected volumes and its hard to make sure i don’t miss any, what with all the one shots and renaming of titles, so i’ve just read Till All Are One Vol2 and it talks about vigilem/carcer like were supposed to know who they are, like they are old characters, and i don’t remember reading about them before. did i miss a book?
I think that Heart of Darkness comes after The Transformers #20 because issue 4 of Heart of Darkness recalls events from issues before #21, and the end of Heart of Darkness says the story continues in issue #21.
Other than that, this list has really helped because the one on tfarchive doesn’t go past MTMTE and RiD
Thanks for pointing that out! I’ve updated the list π
Wow…thank you so much for this! I started with The Death of Optimus Prime and read mostly everything up until Till All Are One #2. This list has been super helpful for me, coming into IDW Transformers for the first time!
It’s awesome to hear that the list has been useful. i hope you’ve been enjoying the comics.
Hey buddy thanks for the list. I have recently started reading Transformers comics and I started with Last stand of the Wreckers. Such a great work. Now reading first five issues of More than meets the eye and must say stories and arts are really gripping. I was wondering what to read and from where to start. This reading order will help me a lot. π
No worries, Swapnil. Glad you’ve found the list helpful and have been enjoying the Transformers comics so much!
Hi. Can I read say….. more than meets the eye from issue to issue without reading robots in disguise in between. Or do I have to abide by the list for the story to make sense… if you know what I mean π
Hi! Great question. You can read Robots in Disguise independently for the most part. It tells its own stream of the story. The only time you’ll be required to read anything else is when there is a crossover.
Thanks :D.
I believe Hearts of Steel and Infestation 2 should be included now with the recent events in the comics revealing that they’re canon to the IDW timeline.
Thanks for pointing that out. I’ve added them to the list.
I think you forgot to add Monstrosity issues 5-12 because you only have 1-4 there after Autocracy.
Monstrosity was originally 12 digital chapters and was then collected into 4 print comics. I have included the print comics in this list. I chucked a note in there to avoid confusion.
Where do the spotlights for Megatron, Orion Pax, Thundercracker and Bumblebee fit into the reading order?
Hi! Great question. It appears all of those, were missing from the list. I have since updated them. The Megatron and Bumblebee spotlights can be found in the Transformers ongoing section, while Orion Pax and Thundercracker are in the Autocracy/Monstrosity/Primacy section.
Hello! spotlight sixshot shoukd be somewhere before escalation #6
Thanks! I have updated the reading order π
Hey,
thank you so much! You did a good job here π
Are you going to continue the reading guide with the new ongoing series?
Greeting from Germany
Your order for Combiner Wars is wrong.
Transformers #39 is “Opening Salvo,” (not CW part 2)
Windblade Vol 2 #1 is CW part 1
Transformers #40 is CW part 2 (not part 4)
Transformers #41 is CW part 4 (not part 6)
Transformers #42 and Windblade #4 are both “Epilogue”
You are right! I’ve updated the list π
Thanks. Can’t tell you how helpful this reading order has been for me.
Till All Are One #5 and #6 are part of Titans Return and come before Revolution. Also #56 & #57 of the other 2 series should be read together, not apart.
Thanks for pointing that out, you’re totally right! I’ve fixed up the Titans Returns part of the list.
Trevor, actually they changed it and added a page to explain why now Till All Are One #5-8 (Which is the conclusion of Titans Return) come after Revolution, although originally they were planned to be before.
So Revolution now takes place in the middle of Titans Return, rather than after in between Part #4 and Part #5.
Thanks for letting me know, Nik. I’ve update the list π
