The How to Love Comics Book Club is back for another month and with it comes to a brand new book to read. In August we’ll be reading Ghost World by cartoonist Daniel Clowes and published by Fantagraphics Books.
This 1997 alt classic explores teenage angst through the lens two young girls, Enid Coleslaw and Rebecca Doppelmeyer. The cynical pair has just graduated high school and now wander aimlessly through town while wondering what they need to do with their lives.
Ghost World is a strange and humourous read that has garnished it critical praise, commercial success and awards. It was even adapted into a 2001 feature film which starred Scarlett Johansson, Thora Birch and Steve Buscemi.
How Does Book Club Work?
For those who are new to the Book Club this is essentially how it works:
- The book is announced on the 1st Wednesday of the month.
- Everyone then has roughly a month to go out and read it.
- We all come back on the final Sunday of the following month and discuss the title in the comments and social media. (I will make a new post for the discussion)
Pretty simple!
When Will The Discussion Take Place?
Book Club discussions happen on the final Sunday of the month. August’s will take place on the 28th of the same month.
Don’t stress if you can’t make it in time as the discussion will be up on the website forever so you can join in at any time!

Where Can I Find Ghost World?
Comic Book Store
Find a copy at your local comic book store. If they don’t have a copy in stock ask them to order you one in. Usually it takes a week or two to get into the store.
Online
Amazon | Amazon UK | Barnes & Noble | Book Depository | IndieBound | eBay | In Stock Trades | Things From Another World | Fantagraphics
Library
Find at a library near you that has Ghost World available for loan.
Spread the News
Book Clubs are way more fun when there are more people involved. So why not tell your friends and family to join in?
Better yet, let your comic book store know about this month’s Book Club as I am sure they wouldn’t mind spreading the word if it meant selling more copies.
If you want to talk about the Book Club or post any photos of you reading Ghost World you can use the hashtag #HTLCBookClub on your favourite social media. I’ll monitor the hashtag and share anything cool I see.
Keep an eye out for anything related to the Book Club on Facebook, Twitter or in the Weekly Newsletter. I’ll see you all on to discuss Ghost World on Sunday, August 28th.
I Can’t Wait That Long
For those who can’t wait until the end of the month, jump into July’s discussion. We talked about the fantastic Locke & Key.
