PREVIEW: Batman #1 Starts With A Bang

By Comments

After getting a taste with Batman: Rebirth #1 a fortnight ago the new Batman series has finally begun with Batman #1. Written by Tom King and art by superstar artist David Finch, Batman #1 introduces us to a new hero in Gotham City. But is this new hero an ally of Batman‘s or does he see Batman as part of the problem? Read on to find out more about this new reader friendly issue as well as read a sneak peek.

In the opening story, titled “I Am Gotham”, we are introduced to a new hero of Gotham City. Calling himself “Gotham”, he’s young, bold and looking to take the mantle of the city’s protector from Batman. Will he be able to work together with Batman or will he consider the Caped Crusader as unwanted competition? You’ll have to read it to find out!

What makes this new Batman series exciting is writer Tom King, who used to be an espionage officer in the C.I.A. With his past experience King will create new and exciting problems to throw at the Dark Knight. He’ll also use his experience of how he managed to deal with the not so pretty things that come with the job. With this wisdom, we’re sure to see how close Batman can get to the horrors of his crusade without it consuming him.

Joining King as part of art duties is superstar artist David Finch, who is no stranger to drawing Batman. Finch has drawn many Batman issues – along with some of the biggest characters in comics including Wonder Woman, Avengers and the X-Men – and with this experence should create some great looking Batman pages. As you’ll see in the preview below his art is both gritty and detailed, with plenty of contrasting shadow, which will fit nicely into the themes and characters for this story.

Helping make Finch’s art look even better is inker Matt Banning and colourist Jordie Bellaire. Banning is a regular inker for David Finch so he will know how to make his art stand out. The inclusion of Jordie Bellaire is also exciting as she is the most versatile collourists in comics. With these two combination of these two with David Finch’s pencils Batman #1 is going to look amazing.

Whether or not you’ve read the Batman: Rebirth one-shot, Batman #1 is a great jumping on point for the Dark Knight. You won’t be required to know any prior knowledge of what has been happening in the Batman comics lately. So dive right in!

Batman #1 is available at all good comic book stores and digitally from June 15th.
