NOTE: This is a reading order for the Civil War II. If you’re looking for a reading order for the original event you will find it here.
Civil War II is Marvel’s big comic book event for 2016 which will divide much of their huge roster of heroes. It will be hero against hero as they battle over how they should operate. How does this conflict all begin? It call comes down to one Inhuman – Ulysses. This brand new Inhuman has the ability to see future events.
Some heroes, lead by Captain Marvel will want to use this ability to go all Minority Report when it comes to tackling threats. Others, such as those on the side of Iron Man, don’t think it is a good idea and potentially dangerous. These groups feel so strongly about these ideals that they’re willing to go to war against each other to fight for what they believe in. Throw Thanos into the mix and we have a massive story.
As big Marvel events can sometimes be a bit confusing, I’ve created the Civil War II Reading Order Checklist. This handy guide not only gives you a reading order but also lists the creative teams, release dates and tie-ins involved.
Before we get to the list, here are some common questions about Civil War II.
Do I Need To Read The Original Civil War To Understand This?
Nope.
Civil War II is a thematic sequel as opposed to a direct sequel. This means you can read this event without having read the original.
If you watch this video it should give you basic information on all the characters you need to know.
What Is “Road to Civil War II”?
Road to Civil War II are comics Marvel has labelled as ones that lead up to the events of Civil War II.
Do I Need To Read The Tie-Ins?
Nope.
Marvel sets up events like this in a way you can get a full story from the main series and the tie-ins are parallel stories. Some of these are closer to the main story than others. Some spin-out in their own direction based on something that happens in the main story while others will show what happens to characters off-panel.
How Do I Read Civil War II?
I have set up the Civil War II Reading Order Checklist in a way that gives you a general guide on how it can be read if you want to read everything, but at the same time, it is set up so you can read it in different ways. These are:
- Read Civil War II #0-8
- Read Civil War II #0-8, and the tie-ins that you are interested in (which is fair enough considering there are so many of them!)
- Read Civil War II #0-8, and all of the tie-ins
If you are currently reading any of the comics which tie-in to Civil War II then you can continue to read them without worrying about the stories being interrupted. Marvel has stated that even though they tie-in to this big event they will also continue story threads of the series.
If you are only reading some of the tie-ins then you can use the Civil War II Reading Order Checklist to see where you should read these in relation to the main story.

Will You Be Reading Civil War II?
Will you be reading Marvel’s big event for 2016? Let me know in the comments below or via Facebook or Twitter.
Previous Marvel Event Reading Order: Secret Wars
Next Marvel Event Reading Order: Secret Empire
I just read Ultimates vol 1 and liked it a lot, would like to continue reading it but the next volume will tie in to Civil War II. Is it safe to read? Would I be able to understand what’s going on in Ultimates without reading the main event series? Or would I be better of to skip it and continue with the new series, Ultimates2?
So if I want to read everything in this event I will need to read and purchase over 150 comics? Did I count that correctly? That is quite the financial commitment.
Hi Bruce, if you want to read absolutely everything then yes. Sometimes Marvel goes all out with these events. Luckily you don’t have to read everything. My suggestion is to stick with the main miniseries and then splinter off into the tie-ins that interest you.
you have placed the Invincible Iron Man #11 before the Invincible Iron Man #10 in the timeline. something you should fix.
Thanks for pointing that out. I’ve fixed the list π
The question is… do I wait until December to read the new number ones that I already have?
I’d say go ahead and read them. They shouldn’t spoil the ending of Civil War II.
I also recommend reading Invincible Iron Man #14 & Spider-Man #9 before Civil War II #7. The lead up to it perfectly.
Sweet. I’ve moved them in the list to just before Civil War II #7.
Spider-man #9 comes out November 16th and is a civil war aftermath tie in
Thanks for pointing that out. I’ve updated the list π
Hi thanks for the list and was just wondering if captain marvel #10 came out cause I got most of the end of the list but in the marvel app it atill doesn’t have xaptain marvel ten. Maybe its going to release later?
Hey Adrian, due to the main series delays Marvel have pushed back Captian Marvel #10 until November. I’ve adjusted the list π
Again thank you for all your hard work. Also I think its kinda weird that all the aftermath of civil war 2 are coming out before it wven finished. Do you maybe know why? Just wondering
Hey Adrian, I believe it’s because Civil War II keeps getting delayed but Marvel don’t want to hold-up other comics.
Hey Trevor! I wanna read Infamous Iron Man #1, but to read that you probably need to read Invincible Iron Man #14 which is only at the bottom of this Civil War II reading list. What should I do? (Thank you for your help as always).
Hey Martim, great question. I haven’t read Infamous Iron Man #1 yet but everything I have read about it says that it is very ambiguous about what has happened to Tony Stark. Based on that you should be able to jump right into it and not have anything spoiled.
This is an indispensable list for me, thank you so much for not only doing it, but also doing it so well! ??
Seriously, man. Invincible Ironman #11 goes before Civil War #0 and Invincible Ironman #12 after Uncanny Inhumans #11
Hey Mash, thanks for thee feedback. I’ll make the changes as soon as I can. Also, next time there is no need to be so rude if you find something wrong in a list. With a list this complex there are bound to be a few mistakes. Just point them out in a civil manner. I’ve spent about 20 hours out my own time to do this list. The last thing I need is someone being a jerk about it.
Now saying “Seriously” is being rude. That seems legit.
Patsy Walker, A.K.A. Hellcat! #8 should be inmediatly after Civil War #1. This change is of minor importance but won’t keep fans wondering about She-Hulk’s fate (I thought she died).
And only 20 hours? I’m spending more reading the complete comic’s series just to keep a good track of the storyline but this isn’t a competition. The point should be working making a better timeline of this list.
At the beggining you put International Iron Man #3. First, it’s #4. Second, it’s only related because at the beggining there is a news report about the extradimensional invasion of Civil War II #1 so it goes after CW #1
Invincible Iron Man until #11 and Captain Marvel #6 are before Civil War II #0 because Rhodes is alive.
Thanks for the update. International Iron Man #3 is loosely connected to Civil War II and was solicited as a prologue story even if it didn’t have the branding on it. #4 inwards have been have been have tied-in loosely as well, but very much during the events of Civil War II.
Uncanny Inhumans come out October 19th and Totally Awesome Hulk comes out on October 26th
Thanks again for letting me know!
It turns out International Iron Man #7 wasn’t really a Civil War II tie-in, though. Unless Tony finding out about his parent’s lineage was what he was doing when he dissapeared during the siege against his company?
Thanks! I’ll add a note next to it to let readers know.
Hey! Karnak apparently also has his own ongoing series. Does it not tie it with Civil War II?
Hey Martim, Karnak is telling its own story and not tying into Civil War II. The character has appeared in the prequel series Civil War II: Ulysses.
What about the Kingpin tie in?
Appreciate the list, BTW.
Glad you’re digging it!
Uncanny Inhumans #13 comes out on Sept 14th
Thanks for letting me know. I’ve updated the list π
A-Force #9 has the wrong date. at least on my list it comes out on the September 14
Hey Jesus, thanks for letting me know. I’ve fixed it up on the list π
Is astonishing ant man part of civil war ll It’s supposed to take place right before civil war ll starts
Hey Tony, great question. Astonishing Ant-Man has been telling it’s own story and doesn’t tie-in with Civil War II.
Thanks
I dunno if this has been discussed but Captain Marvel #6 is not listed in the right order in my opinion. A certain character who gets axed off in Civil War II issue #1 is seen in Captain Marvel #6 yet its placed after Civil War II #1
Thanks for letting me know π I’ve moved it to just before Civil War II #1.
Just wanted to point out that Guardians of the Galaxy #11 comes out on 31st August not the 10th of August. Please fix. Otherwise so helpful for me as it gets difficult for me to keep track on what to read or not. I also enjoy your other reading checklists as they are really helpful.
Thanks so much
Hey Karan, thanks for letting me know. I’ve updated the list π
Also just check the Totally Awesome Hulk #10 please
Thanks
Thanks for pointing this out. I’ve updated the list π
