While Iron Man is hugely popular on the big screen, thanks to Robert Downey Jr’s portrayal of Tony Stark, the comic book has traditionally been a mid-selling title. This is all about to change with the relaunch of Invincible Iron Man – as part of the All-New, All-Different Marvel publishing initiative – which is set to blast Iron Man to the best-sellers list. Coming along for the ride will be a new armour, a new supporting cast, a new purpose and even some new villains to open up this new era for Tony Stark.
Iron Man’s armour has always been seen as the height of technology, but when a 15 year old at MIT is able to duplicate it he has to step up his game. With this new armour, that’s exactly what he does. In the past Tony needed different armours for different purposes, but with this new armour they will do everything he needs without having to change. This new suit will transform into any tool or weapon that he needs, think of it as the Swiss Army Knife of armours, which sounds pretty cool me.
Before the relaunch it was revealed that Tony Stark was adopted. In this new series Tony will go out searching for answers as to who his biological parents actually are. This will add a bit of mystery to the comic and I’m sure once it’s revealed who they are it will be done with a bang.
On art duties is the great David Marquez, who has previously collaborated with Bendis on Ultimate Spider-Man. Marquez has a clean art style with which allows for a level of minimalism while still being detailed. He’s also responsible for redesigning the new armour, which looks to have been streamlined when compared to previous iterations. It will be interesting to see how he draws the armour’s new abilities and what kinds of variations on it he can come up with.
Along with all these changes Marvel have been hinting that the final page of Invincible Iron Man is going to be big. I have no idea what it will be so you’ll have to read the comic to find out what it is.
Invincible Iron Man #1 is available from all good comic book stores and digitally from October 7th.
Here’s a peek at four preview pages as well as some of the more obtainable variant covers.
Invincible Iron Man is just one of the many comics as part of the All-New, All-Different Marvel publishing initiate.
