The X-Men can be confusing. To a person, such as myself, who’s been reading Marvel’s mutants for 10 years can find some periods of it a bit of a maze but to someone who never read an X-Men comic before it must feel like an impenetrable. With multiple titles, hundreds of characters, crossovers-a-plenty, retcons, characters dying and resurrecting on multiple occasions and the soap opera dynamic of it all, the franchise can appear very scary to those fresh to it. But don’t fear! There’s a podcast that can help! Let me introduce you to Rachel & Miles X-Plain The X-Men, a weekly podcast which does what it says on the box.
Hosted by Rachel and Miles, these two passionately explain The X-Men throughout different points in the franchises history. This could be through dissecting a classic story, giving us the lowdown on a character or some kind of confusing concept as well as answer listeners questions. You can tell the two are passionate about X-Men and they’ve definitely done their research and reading on every topic that they talk about each week.
I’ve been listening to this podcast for the past few weeks and each episode is worth more than one listen as they pack so much into each 50-6o minute episode at a speedy pace with a fine sprinkling of jokes along the way. Even as someone who would call himself a serious X-Men fan I can tell you now that even I am learning plenty from this podcast.
Sometimes they use some comic book lingo that new readers may not be familiar with. But there’s no need to worry as a quick scan over this comic book term glossary should get you up to speed in no time.
If you’re new to the X-Men or your knowledge is a little bit patchy in certain areas this is the podcast for you. Full of passion and highly knowledgeable, Rachel and Miles will explain the X-Men to you in a way that makes it accessible and give you a base knowledge to allow you to dive into the franchise head-first.
You can download episodes of Rachel & Miles X-Plain The X-Men from the website and subscribe to the podcast on iTunes or Stitcher. If you’re digging what you hear I also suggest following them on Twitter and Tumblr as they post all kinds of extra goodies throughout the week.
