13 New Comics You Should Read This December

Every month there are plethora of new comics that come out. While this might sound scary it’s actually a great thing for new readers as they’re able to discover something new to them in a way that is accessible. This December I have highlighted 13 brand new comics that you should check out. Full of variety, this list has all kinds of storytelling and genres with superhero, science fiction, crime, horror, humour, action, adventure, fantasy and more all represented. With this much variety there should be at least one new comic that will appeal to you.

The Valiant

The Valiant is the latest series by Valiant Entertainment with a varied cast and a top creative team. This prestige miniseries aims to be of epic proportions as a group of Valiant’s fan favourite characters have to stop an ancient evil known as the Immortal Enemy. The Valiant aims to be a great jumping on point for Valiant’s comics and should cause ripples through their comics in 2015.

Graveyard Shift

The Graveyard Shift is a mix of genres. It’s crime, horror and romance all mixed into one. This four issue miniseries follows a homicide detective and his girlfriend who put their love to the test when they encounter a criminal gang of vampires.

Graveyard Shift is available on the 24th of December.

Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.

Written by Mike Mignola and John Arcudi. Art by Alex Maleev. Published by Dark Horse Comics.

Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. chronicles Hellboy’s first ever mission with B.P.R.D., in which they investigates a terrible horror in Brazil. As this is set in the early days of Hellboy’s history, this is a great jumping on point for anyone who has ever been interested in reading long standing character. It’s also got art from the great Alex Maleev, which is always a bonus.

Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. #1 is available on the 3rd of December.

Secret Six

Written by Gail Simone. Art by Ken Lashley. Published by DC Comics.

The original Secret Six series, also written by Gail Simone, was a critical hit and fan favourite for many DC Comics fans. It took a ragtag group of villains and developed them in a way that made you care about them, with great stories. This December sees the return of Secret Six into the New 52 era, promising a great jumping on point, mystery and danger. If you have enjoyed Gail Simone’s previous work then I highly recommend this series.

Secret Six #1 is available on the 3rd of December.

Have you been watching Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and wished that there was a comic book about it? Did you wish it included all the superheroes that the Marvel Universe has to offer? Then S.H.I.E.L.D. is the comic for you. This series focuses around the super government agency and will have a rotating cast of great artists and guest appearances from anyone and everyone in the Marvel Universe. Each issue will be self-contained and looks to be a great introduction to the wider Marvel Universe for those haven’t read a lot Marvel.

S.H.I.E.L.D. #1 is available on the 31st of December.

Spider-Man and the X-Men

Have you ever wondered what would happened if Spider-Man was the guidance counselor at the X-Men’s school? With this new series you will be able to find out! This new series looks like it will be a lot of fun, with plenty of humour and silliness. Don’t worry if you are not reading either Amazing Spider-Man or any of the X-Men titles as this series looks like it will do its own thing.

Spider-Man and the X-Men #1 is available on the 10th of December.

Harley Quinn has been a big hit for DC Comics, with her popularity seemingly growing with every month. In this Holiday Special it’s safe to assume that there will be plenty of holiday themed shenanigans from great range of artists. If you have been looking to read Harley Quinn then this is a good place to jump on.

Are you a Masters of the Universe fan? Then He-Man: The Eternity War is a series you should be reading this December. He-Man: The Eternity War promises to feature a war that will end all wars and looking at the cover it appears that it will feature a large cast of characters.

He-Man: The Eternity War is available on the 24th of December.

When Dillon Chase’s family is killed by a wolf, he swears that he will get his revenge. But he soon finds out that in order to achieve his goals he might have to become what he is hunting. Wolf Moon is a six issue series about werewolves which will take readers where they haven’t been before.

Wolf Moon #1 is available on the 3rd of December.

Bitch Planet is a science fiction exploitation style story that is set on an all-female prison planet. From interviews I have read, this is Kelly Sue cutting loose and going wild. If you are a fan of exploitation films of the 70s and 80s then this series is for you.

Bitch Planet #1 is available on the 10th of December.

Abigail and the Snowman

Out of all the series on this list, Abigail and the Snowman is definitely the sweetest. This four issue series is about the imaginative 9-year-old Abigail who meets a Yeti named Claude and become best of friends. As Claude is on the run from a shady government agency Abigail decides to help him return to his home where he can be safe. Roger Langridge is a critical hit for his all ages comics so we can expect great things with this series.

Written by Matt Groening and various. Art by Matt Groening and various. Published by Bongo Comics.

Springfield’s muscle-bound action hero, McBain, finally stars in his very own comic book one-shot. The Simpsons comics have been around for more than 20 years and it is surprising that it has taken so long for McBain to star in his own comic. If you are a Simpsons fan then keep an eye out for this.

McBain is available on the 17th of December.

This over-sized bupper mixtape of cool alternative comics should be a real gem this December. This anthology features a mixture of new short stories from established series, such as Lumberjanes and Teen Dog, as well as teasing upcoming series and highlighting some really cool talent. If you are a regular reader of comics on Tumblr you will dig this big time. You can find out more about this anthology here.
