The Witcher video games, based upon a series of short stories by Polish fantasy writer Andrzej Sapkowski, have been a huge selling franchise, selling millions of copies. Heavily inspired by Polish (and neighbouring countries) folklore, The Witcher has created a fantasy world that is rich with supernatural elements, dangerous monsters and characters with grey morals. While fans wait for the release of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt later in the year, Dark Horse Comics will be releasing a 5 issue miniseries based on the franchise – written by Paul Tobin and art by Joe Querio.
What is this miniseries about? Here is the official solicitation:
Traveling near the edge of the Black Forest, monster hunter Geralt meets a widowed fisherman whose dead and murderous wife resides in an eerie mansion known as the House of Glass—which seems to have endless rooms, nothing to fill them with, and horror around every corner.
According to Polygon, the comic series will fill in time between the novels. As one can assume, during this time Geralt is just doing his job as a witcher – hunting down monsters. In this particular story, Geralt will be tracking down a murderous witch wife that has taken over the mansion in which she used to live in.
Comics are a great medium for The Witcher as the stories have been traditionally short tales. As a result, this comic series should not feel out of place with the novels and games.
If you are a fan of the novels, video games or morally grey fantasy then this Witcher miniseries is for you. The Witcher #1 is available in all good comic book stores and digitally from March 19th.
Below is a six-page preview of the issue.
