In recent years Image Comics have launched a diverse range of new series that excite regular comic readers and bring new readers into the industry. Image’s latest series, Sovereign by Chris Roberson and Paul Maybury, looks like it has the potential to be the next series to do just that. We even put on our New Comics to Look Out for in March list. Filled with fantasy elements that look to be inspired by J. R. R. Tolkien, Sovereign tells of a world that has a resurgence of magic and magical creatures after a long absence.
The series follows a group of masked undertakers as they battle the undead with only their chosen weapons and might. Throughout the land civil war is breaking out as cultures collide with one another. Throw in the resurgence of gods, demons, and magic and Sovereign’s protagonists have a lot to handle in this ever changing world.
Based upon the preview images below, Paul Maybury’s style isn’t one that you would associate with fantasy, but looking at his environments and character designs I believe it works. He has created a world that looks like it is full of peril and danger through his use of heavy inks, loose line and a colour palette of darker tones. It will be interesting to see what other environments he creates as we see more of this world.
Sovereign is a series that looks like it will create a large and expansive world, full of interesting ideas. If you are fan of fantasy like Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones then this is a comic you should look out for.
Sovereign #1 is available in all good comic book stores and digitally from March 19th.

I just read your article on how to get into comics, and followed a link over here for suggestions. I’m an avid RPG gamer, a fan of things like DnD and LOTRs for years, just got done watching my new Hobbit DvD, and I think this will be a perfect place for me to start my jump into comics. Thanks for this rad site.
