PREVIEW: Tomb Raider #1 by Gail Simone and Nicolas Daniel Selma

By 0 Comments

Since her début in 1996, Lara Croft has become the most notable video game heroine to date. She has appeared on almost every console available and even two Hollywood films, so it was natural that she star in her own comic series. Published by Dark Horse Comics and written by the very popular Gail Simone, with art by Nicolas Daniel Selma, Tomb Raider continues in the new reboot continuity of the most recent game.

This ongoing series will pick up where the previous game left off, telling adventures of the young Lara Croft. For the opening arc, titled Survivor’s Guilt, Gail Simone has been tight-lipped in regards to plat. Although looking at the preview below, it will include plenty of action, danger and exotic locations.

In a recent interview, Gail Simone talked about the translation between video games and comics is for the character. There will be more urgency in the comic than in the games, “as she can get shot 50 times and wait a bit, and be fine. I can’t do that in the comic. I can’t kill her and hit reset.” So, every time Lara fails there are larger consequences.

For those who worry that we will see an overly sexualized Lara Croft, like the days of old, should not have to worry under the pen of Gail Simone. Gail is one of the premier female writers in the industry and has a track record of portraying strong, positive female portrayals including Birds of Prey, Batgirl, Wonder Woman and Red Sonja. Due to this, she has picked up a large following, which will mean this series should sell quite well.

If you haven’t played the games you probably won’t need to worry as it is set quite early in her career, meaning that there will be a little back story. This means that fans new and old should enjoy this comic.

Tomb Raider #1 is released in all good comic book stores and digitally from February 26th.
