By 2 Comments

For the past two years Marvel has published a one-shot called Point One that has showcased many of the publisher’s upcoming titles. With all a few exceptions these stories have been original creations that have lead into upcoming stories, allowing for the reader to get a taste or introduction of things to come. 2014 is no exception with Point One returning, as All-New Marvel Now Point One, to showcase titles due to be released in the coming months.

This year, Point One will include lead-in stories for series such as Loki: Agent Of Asgard, Silver Surfer, Black Widow, All-New Invaders and Avengers World. With these stories, you will be able to get a feel for the tone these comics as well as a taste of what to expect from the creative team. With the variety of stories there sure to be something that gets your excited. I know I am looking forward to the Silver Surfer title.

Marvel has given us a taste of what to expect from All-New Marvel NOW Point One with a preview of two of the stories. The first one is a Loki story that shows off his new status as an agent of Asgard. From the two pages shown, it looks like he still has his credentials as the God of Mischief. The Silver Surfer story gives us the first appearance of Dawn, who will join The Silver Surfer on his journeys in a similar manner to the companions in Doctor Who. Additionally, the series looks like it will feature many strange and wonderful aliens and locations. So if you are a Doctor Who fan this may be a series to have on your radar.

All-New Marvel NOW Point One #1 is available in all good comic stores and digitally from January 8th.

Take a look at the covers by Salvador Larroca and Steve McNiven as well as the aforementioned preview pages of the Loki and Silver Surfer stories below.

  • I’ll just add an opposing view here. I moved away from American comics MANY years ago; did not like how dark they were. Long story short the new Marvel stories that have come out in the last year and at this time are bringing me back. I love the art in Thor, Loki, Black Widow. What they have planned with Thor and Loki is . . . well I LOVE that they are taking the trickster god back to his mythic roots of being snarky & mischievous. His fall into pure evil was a MAJOR turn off for me.

The glimpse we get in this is nice & makes me wonder how much of the new threads that don’t seem connected will end up all together in the end. There is already one in the the #1 of Loki to an arc in Thor.

My opinion is any of the comics introduced here would be worth picking up and following. Just be open to letting go of the past & letting the writers take you someplace new.

  • I liked most of this Point One, except for the Loki and Silver Surfer parts. I’ll pass on the new Loki book–while Thor is awesome, I don’t think I’ll care too much about the God of Mischief.

I was really looking for to Silver Surfer, too. However, just like with Volume 1 (http://cobyscomics.blogspot.com/2013/11/essential-silver-surfer-volume-1.html), I was dissapointed. The “cosmic rays” gag was pretty funny, but the rest of it tried to hard to be funky and out there, I think. Maybe if I was more into Doctor Who I would appreciate it more, but as it is, I’ll probably be passing on this one, for now….
