Between 1998 and 2005, The Powerpuff Girls were the biggest thing to come out of Cartoon Network. Not only did it spawn 78 episodes but also a feature length film and countless merchandise. Although, who could blame them, who wouldn’t enjoy the formula of three kindergarten-aged girls kicking butts as superheroes? Well, now they are back thanks to IDW Publishing in a new comic series that promises to please fans as well as a new generation.
Written and drawn by cartoonist Troy Little, The Powerpuff Girls comic series looks to be an accurate interpretation of the much-loved Cartoon Network series. Visually, the series looks spot-on. Troy Little has been able to capture the style of the franchise from the futuristic 1950s curves, the thickness of the lines to the expressions and gestures of the characters. For those who loved the great personalities of all the characters then you are in luck because, based on the preview, it looks like it has been captured successfully.
I predict that The Powerpuff Girls #1 will sell quite well as I believe there are many people who having been dying for not only a touch of nostalgia but new butt-kicking stories. If you are one of those people then I suggest racing down to your local comic book store from September 25th as this will sell well. Alternatively, you can pick it up digitally from Comixology.
If you are a hardcore collector look out for the Powerpuff Girls #1 boxed set, which includes all the variant covers, including the harder to find ones, for a special price.
