This Saturday is Free Comic Book Day, the most exciting day of the comic book calendar. It’s going to be huge! If you’re not quite sure what it is or where to participate, don’t worry, here’s all the information you need.
Held on the first Saturday of every of May every year, this year being of on May 6th, it’s like Christmas for the comic book community. It’s a celebration of the comic book medium where people get together and share the passion of comics with one another. It doesn’t matter if you’re brand new to comics or have been reading them for years, this day is for you.
As the name suggests, free comics are given out to any and everyone at comic book stores and other participating locations. Many comic book stores celebrate the day by turning it into a big event: throwing parties, having artists do drawings, comic book creators signing comics, big sales, cosplay competitions and other awesome activities. It’s heaps of fun and great to see everyone enjoying themselves, from the young to the young at heart.
Sounds awesome, doesn’t it?
To find your closest Free Comic Book Day participant, I highly recommend heading over to the Free Comic Book Day website. You’ll find a location near you simply by popping your zipcode into the search bar. (If you’re outside of North America, there’s also a special search too which allows you to drill down to participants internationally.) From there you’ll be able to check out the store’s profile and see what’s on as well as their opening hours and other helpful information.
In the past I have noticed that not all stores have listed all the activities that they have on the day listed so it’s a good idea to search what’s going on. The best way to do this is either:
- Check out their website. It’s also a good way to confirm the address and opening hours.
- Check out the store’s Facebook page. Most stores have them and it’s an easy way to keep updated on information about the day and any last minute inclusions.
- Give the store a call during business hours before the day (they’ll be super busy on Saturday)
But not every comic book is free. Comic book stores would go out of business! Each year there is a selection of comics which publishers have hand-picked for your reading pleasure. These free comics tend to give you a taste of something recent releases or upcoming stories, and sometimes even original stories made for the day.
This years batch of comics is quite varied. There’s everything from comedy, such as The Simpson and Fresh Off The Boat, to action, such as Guardians of the Galaxy, and everything in between. You can find all of the participating titles here, along with preview pages to get a taste of what to expect.
Most good comic book stores will stock all of the titles, but some of them will disappear fast as it’s generally first come first serve. As a result, there may be a limit as to how many comics you can get for free. Some stores will allow for more free comics with a purchase but this will vary store to store.
Keep in mind that even through the comic books are free for customers that they cost the comic book store money to order them. So make sure you give them a big thank you, maybe even buy something if something grabs your interest. If you need some ideas as to what to buy here are some reading recommendations.
If you can’t make to Free Comic Book Day, don’t stress, as many of the free comics will be available for free online at a later date.
The most important thing to remember about Free Comic Book Day is to have fun. Bring along your friends and family and check out the festivities, mingle with like-minded people and discover new comics you mightn’t known about before.
Free Comic Book Day is one of the best days of the year and once you’ve participated you’ll know why!
